Riding Turkey History

1911- The first riding school in Turkey, “Equestrian and Field Exercise School”, was opened.
1913- The first Sipahi Ocağı was established by Mahmut Şevket Paşa. This location was used frequently by the military service, which was responsible for their excellent riding skills.
1923- The Turkish Equestrian Association was founded.
1932- Turkey became a member of the FEI.
1933- The first Turkish national race was held at Taksim Stadium in Istanbul.
1935- Aachen Konkurhipikleri received the first gold medal along with First Ranking Lieutenant, Saim Polatkan riding Kısmet.
1936- Turkey competed in the Berlin Olympics. General Cevat Kula riding Çapkın received 6th place, which is still the highest Olympic record today.
1938- Turkey along with Germany, Italy, Ireland, and Romania competed in the Musollini National Gold Cup, otherwise known as the First Nations Cup. First place winners from Turkey were: Cevat Kula riding GÜÇLÜ, Saim Polatkan riding ÇAKAL, Eyüp Öncü riding ÜNAL, and Cevat Gürkan riding YILDIZ.
1948- During the Rotterdam National Cup, General Ziya Azak riding Rüzgar received 1st, General Kemal Özçelik riding Şahin received 2nd, and Major Salim Polatkan riding Yıldız received 3rd place at the first individual Grand Prix awards.
1948- Turkey participated in the Olympic games in London.
1954- Kemal Özçelik riding Domino won first place in show jumping at the Marseilles International Competition, jumping 2.10 cm high.
1956- At the 4th Show Jumping World Championship, General Kemal Özçelik riding Haydi received 3rd place, at 2.07 cm along with Aachen.
1956- Nuri Oğlakçı establishes the Istanbul Equestrian Club.
1956- Turkey competed in the Stockholm Olympic Games. General Özçelik, riding Eskimo, received 18th place.
1958- The Equestrian Federation joined the General Physical Conditioning Agency.
1958- The Equestrian Federation director’s position was taken over by Nejat Eczacıbaşı.
1959- Nejat Eczacıbaşı participated alongside Olympic champion Pierre Jonqueres d’Oriola in the national competition held at the Mithatpaşa Stadium.
1960- Cevdet Sümer received 15th place at the Rome Olympics.
1964-1988 Equine influenza and glanders in Turkey prohibited horses from participating in FEI races for quite sometime. During this time period equestrians from Turkey participated in competitions in the Balkan regions.
1978- The equestrian competition groups were abolished due to actions taken by government armed forces that lasted until 1984, when they joined continental forces.
1992- Turkish equestrians received the gold medal at the Equestrian Championship.
1994- After much controversy with FEI, Turkey was placed in the European Group, as opposed to being placed in the Asian Group.
1999- Horses from Turkey were not permitted entrance into Europe.
2002- Horses from Turkey were permitted entrance into Europe.

In The Balkan Championships of 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004, Turkish equestrians received gold, silver and bronze awards in various categories.
2005- The Turkish national team placed at the top of the Adult, Young Adult and Youth categories both as a team and individually at the Balkan Show-Jumping Championships.
2006- The Turkish team were champions at the Balkan Championships while the Yıldız team impressed by bringing home the gold for the dressage category for the first time. The European Stars Championship was organized by the Equestrian Federation of Turkey (TBF) at the Equestrian Club. During the competition, the national team placed 5th as a team, while Turkish young equestrians took the top prize in the individual categories.
2006- One of Turkey’s most important Equestrian Competitions is the Atatürk Kupası (Atatürk Cup), organized by the Equestrian Federation of Turkey at the Sipahi Ocağı Binicilik Kulübü. This year for the first time 2000 people attended the competition in which Mert Alıcıoğlu placed first for the 3rd time in a row.
The Turkish equestrian team took the gold in the star, youth, young adult, Amazon and Expert Categories at the Show-Jumping Balkan Championships, leaving the other Balkan country competitors in the dust. Sencer Horasan took the top prize in the Ustalar Ferdi Balkan Championships (Expert Individual Balkan Championship).
2007- Atlı Dayanıklık (Endurance) Balkan Championship: The national team brought home the silver medal.
2008- Engel Atlama (Endurance) Balkan Championship- In the team category the Turkish star and expert equestrians brought home the gold; in the young adult category, the bronze medal; in the star category, Yusuf Huysal brought home the gold, Ömer Ersin, the bronze; in the youth category, Dilara Yurttutan, the silver; in the Young Adult category, Mert Emiroğlu brought the silver; Sencer Can garnered the silver in the Expert category while Sencer Horasan garnered the bronze.
2008- At Terbiyesi (Dressage) Balkan Championship- Star equestrians Melanie Çosar won first place in the individual event, while Aslı Savaşkan received the 2nd place award. The equestrian team was the Balkan Champion for the first time, while Zeynep Ulgezen placed 2nd in the individual Balkan category. Additionally, Expert (Usta) equestrian Ferhat Yavaş was also the Ferdi (individual) Balkan Champion.
2008- Atlı Dayanıklık (Endurance) Balkan Champion- The national team won the bronze medal.
2008- Üç Günlük Yarışma Balkan Şampiyonası (3-day Race Balkan Championship)- The team received the bronze medal. Additionally, in the CCI2* race held in Bulgaria, equestrian Oktay Köprü received the top prize in the individual category.
2008- Avrupa Yıldızlar Şampiyonası (European Stars Championship)- The Turkish National Team placed third in Europe, a true success. Also, Yusuf Huysal placed 5th in the individual category.
2008- With the coordination and sponsorship of S Uluslararası Binicilik Merkezi (S International Equestrian Centre), the SIEC Junior Cup has earned a place on the official activity calendar as the SIEC YOUTH WORLD SERIES by the FEI.
